Football, Resolutions and Other New Year Stuff

It’s been long enough now for me to be able to try to talk about the UT Vols football game that left us so disappointed and speechless. But I still don’t know what to say. For sure if we had not missed the extra point we would have won. Take away the interception in OT and we could have won. There are other things that would have influenced the outcome of the game had they been different. Among them is the way the officials handled the game at the end. After all the time they took to make sure they got it right, how in world did they miss the penalty for too many players on the field? The way I understand it, some of the NC players were not trying to get off the field which should have made the penalty 15 yards instead of 5 yards. So how did that happen? That is one that could have easily changed the outcome of the game by making the field goal kick 15 yards longer. Could NC have  made it. Sure, but the question is would they have made it? Oh well, life and football are the same. Rarely are they ever fair.

All in all, I am proud of the team and they way they have played this year. And I am looking forward to how they are going to play in the future. They are young, talented, and I believe they have a good coaching staff to help this team get back to playing Tennessee football as we know it and love it. GO VOLS!!!!

How’s those New Years Resolutions going? If you are like most people, or me, there’s a good chance you have already broken them. Or at least some of them. Somehow , dieting always made me hungry. Planning to exercise more made me tired. Trying to be better organized made me leave stuff out so I could find it which resulted in more clutter. It’s a weird circle that you get caught in when you make resolutions. Or at least it is for me. I finally made a New Years resolution that I have been able to keep and hope to keep for years to come. NO MORE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS. Strangely enough, that has not made me want to make a New Years resolution.

Did you ever watch people around the first of the year? You can almost feel some excitement in the air as the year begins and we look forward to what the new year will bring. Just because the date changes we look for a new beginning and for things to get better in our lives. This will be the year that things finally come together. And then we go on doing the same things as we did the year before. Our fresh start is entirely hooked to the date change. That’s really all that changes for most of us. BUT….

What about a fresh start with Jesus? If we believe that a date change can bring new and exciting things, how much more could the God of this universe bring to our lives? Just think about it, when we confess our sins and draw close to God, we get a fresh start. God wipes the slate clean and we are free to write a whole new chapter. As our faith in God grows, we begin to realize that He changes us and gives us power to really bring about true change in our lives. We don’t have to change ourselves, He changes us.

Here’s my plan and I encourage you to consider it also.

    1. Move/ draw closer to God by reading His word more. “let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” Hebrews 10:22
    2. Surrender my heart daily to the leading of the Holy Spirit. “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” Colossians 8:10
    3. Enjoy and experience what He has for me in the future. “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” Titus 2:12-13
  1. There are no promises of smooth sailing, just the promise of a very capable Captain of your ship when you allow God into your life. Have a great day and know that Jesus loves you.
